Specialising in cosmetics innovation for the past 60 years, the Japanese firm KOSÉ has found new momentum in Lyon, by locating its European R&D centre here. Let’s take a closer look at a strategic presence that's paying off.

Upmarket, innovative cosmetics

KOSÉ is a leader on the cosmetics market in Japan. For 60 years, the brand has been celebrated for its high-performance product ranges. Their secret? A composition based on spring water and ingredients from traditional Japanese cooking, such as rice and soy.

Committed to research and innovation, the Group decided to open a European R&D centre in 2017. The objective: to better understand the skin’s aging mechanisms and to evaluate the efficacy of raw materials using a dynamic 3D model.

Dermocosmetology specialists in the Lyon area

For KOSÉ, the decision to come to Lyon was a very deliberate one: the company was convinced by the local area’s expertise in the sector of dermocosmetology. This excellence has emerged from a combination of skills and resources at research structures (hospitals and universities) and in local companies in the sector.

Lyon also has a long tradition of tissue engineering. This dates back to 1952, with the opening of the first centre for the treatment of severe burn victims in continental Europe. The centre, founded at the Saint-Luc Hospital by Pierre Colson, has since associated with the Edouard Herriot Hospital to form the largest centre in France.

Tailored support, from advice to the search for real estate

KOSÉ sought the help of Aderly’s specialists to prepare for its arrival in the Lyon area. The firm relied on Aderly’s staff for tax, legal and banking advice. Next, the agency offered several real estate solutions to accommodate one of the company's Japanese researchers.

The company also counted on Aderly’s mobility support service: from helping staff find housing to completing administrative tasks, the agency helped the firm at every stage of its setup in the local area.
